H. annuus is a plant of the family Asteraceae (Compositae). The Helianthus term is derived from the “Helios” in Greek, meaning sun, and “Anthos” meaning flower, and from Latin annuus, meaning annual. it was grown initially as an ornamental plant and later for food and medical purposes in southern America in 1510.
